Do I Need a Mobile App for My Shopify Store?

A straight answer, including the cases where the answer is no.

The question underneath the question

Nobody wants an app. They want the thing an app does — a customer who comes back without being bought again. So the real question is whether your customers have a reason to return, and whether you currently have any way to remind them.

Four signs the answer is yes

Most of your traffic is mobile and converts worse there than on desktop. A meaningful share of revenue is repeat business. You sell something consumable, seasonal or collectable. And your only route back to a past customer today is paid — retargeting, or an email list with a falling open rate.

Three signs the answer is no, or not yet

Very low traffic: there is nobody to convert into an installer. A genuinely one-off purchase with no repeat and no referral. Or a catalogue still being built — launch the store properly first, because an app makes a thin catalogue look thinner.

How to decide without guessing

Take your monthly revenue, your ad spend and your average order value, and work out what a modest lift in repeat purchases would be worth over a year. If that figure is smaller than the build, the answer is no today and possibly yes in a year. There is a calculator on this site that does the arithmetic.

What we would actually tell you

An app earns its keep on repeat purchases. If your customers buy once and have no reason to return, no amount of design changes that, and we would say so on a call rather than take the money. If they do come back — for a new season, a refill, a replacement — then the question is only whether you reach them for free or pay for them twice.
