Ecommerce Retention: The Guide for Stores That Keep Paying for the Same Customer
Acquisition brings customers; retention is what turns them into revenue.
The number most stores do not know
What share of this month’s revenue came from someone who had bought before. Most owners can quote their conversion rate to one decimal place and have never calculated this. It is the number that decides whether growth compounds or has to be bought again every month.
Why acquisition-first stops working
Acquisition cost rises. It has risen every year for a decade and there is no mechanism by which it falls. A store whose entire growth depends on buying strangers is running against a headwind that gets stronger.
The three levers that are actually free
A channel you own rather than rent. A reason to come back that is not a discount. And a purchase experience fast enough that the second order takes less effort than the first. None of these is a marketing budget line.
Where an app fits
It is not a retention strategy on its own — it is the place a retention strategy can happen. The home-screen icon, the saved session and the free notification are the three things a browser tab cannot give you.
What we would actually tell you
An app earns its keep on repeat purchases. If your customers buy once and have no reason to return, no amount of design changes that, and we would say so on a call rather than take the money. If they do come back — for a new season, a refill, a replacement — then the question is only whether you reach them for free or pay for them twice.
