Mobile App vs Mobile Website: An Honest Comparison
What each one is genuinely better at, including where the website wins.
Where the website genuinely wins
Discovery. A website is indexed, linkable and shareable; an app is none of those. Nobody finds your app by searching for a product. Every customer an app serves arrived through the website first, which is why an app is an addition rather than a replacement.
Where the app genuinely wins
Everything after the first visit. It sits on the home screen instead of being searched for. It stays signed in, so the cart, the wishlist and the order history survive. It loads from the device rather than over the network on every tap. And it has a notification channel that costs nothing to use.
The comparison people get wrong
Conversion rate. App conversion is almost always higher than mobile web, and the headline figure is misleading: an app user has already chosen you once by installing. Some of that gap is the app being better, and some of it is that the audience is pre-selected. Both matter, but they are not the same claim.
What this means in practice
Keep the website doing what it is good at — being found. Add the app for what a browser tab cannot do — being kept. A store that does the first well and has no answer to the second is paying for the same customer repeatedly.
What we would actually tell you
An app earns its keep on repeat purchases. If your customers buy once and have no reason to return, no amount of design changes that, and we would say so on a call rather than take the money. If they do come back — for a new season, a refill, a replacement — then the question is only whether you reach them for free or pay for them twice.
